1853First train in India runs from Bombay to Thane.
1857First war of Indian independence also called the Sepoy Mutiny by the British was fought between Indian kingdoms and the British East India Company.
1881The first complete census of population conducted on a uniform basis throughout India.
1885Formation of Indian National Congress by A.O. Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, W.C. Bonnerjee and others on 28 December.
1905Partition of Bengal by Lord Curzon was announced in July and implemented in October. The partition was later annulled in 1911. Swadeshi Movement calling for boycott of foreign goods was launched in August.
1909Indian Council Act popularly known as Minto Morley reforms allowing a limited increase in the involvement of Indians in governance passed.
1911Visit of King George V to India, Shifting of capital from Calcutta to Delhi. Jana Gana Mana first sung at Calcutta session of INC. Launch of first air mail in India & World from Bumraulli to Allahabad.

196914 private sector banks were nationalised on 19 July 1969. India's first Atomic Power Station Tarapur commenced commercial operation on October 28. The Indian National Congress split into 2 parties in November, one led by Mrs Indira Gandhi and the other led by Shri K Kamaraj.
1971India Pakistan war was fought from 03 December to 16 December.
1972Simla agreement was signed by Smt. Indira Gandhi and Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to put an end to the conflict and confrontation between the two countries.
1974First nuclear test codenamed Smiling Buddha carried out at Pokhran (Rajasthan) on May 18.
1975First Indian satellite Aryabhatta launched on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar in USSR. Emergency was imposed on June 25 under Article 352 because of prevaling internal disturbances.
1977Congress lost power for the first time at the centre and Shri Morarjee Desai was sworn in as the Prime Minister.
1980The Congress returned to power with Smt Indira Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister again. Six more private sector banks were nationalised.
1982Colour television transmission started in India. IX Asian Games held in Delhi from 19 November to 04 December.
1984Smt Indira Gandhi, Indian Prime Minister was assassinated on 31 October by her body guards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. Shri Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest person to be the Prime Minister of India.
1991Shri Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister was assassinated in a suicide attack in Sriperumbudur on 21 May. Economic liberalisation commenced in India.
1992Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya was demolished by a mob.
1995Access to internet for Indian people was provided on 15 August 1995.
1998India’s second nuclear tests codenamed Operation Shakti were carried in May.
1999Kargil invasion by Pakistani troops.
2000India's population reaches 1 billion mark.
2001Earthquake in Gujarat (January), Attack on Indian Parliament (December).
2002Godhra incident occurred.
2004Tsunami in Indian Ocean which caused large scale destruction in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
2008Chandrayaan-1, India's first lunar probe was launched on 22 October from Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Terrorist attack on important places in Mumbai on 26 November.
2013Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, was launched on 05 November from Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
