  • Monetary Grant:No monetary grant. Recipients are given a certificate and a medallion.
  • Criteria: In recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.
  • Limit: Not more than 3 are given in a year.

Padma Awards

The Padma Awards were introduced in the year 1954 as Padma Vibhushan. It had three classes namely Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg. These were subsequently renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri vide Presidential Notification issued on January 8, 1955.

The award is normally not conferred posthumously except in highly deserving cases. A higher category of Padma award can be conferred on a person only where a period of atleast five years has elapsed since conferment of the earlier Padma award. The total number of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards and to foreigners) should not be more than 120.

  • Monetary Grant: Rs. 3.00 Lakhs
  • Criteria: Exceptional and distinguished service in all fields of activities/disciplines, such as Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service, Trade and Industry etc.
  • First Recipients: Satyendra Nath Bose (Scientist), Nandalal Bose (Painter), Zakir Husain (Educationist), Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher (Politician), V. K. Krishna Menon (Diplomat), Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (King of Bhutan)

Padma Bhushan

  • Monetary Grant: Rs. 2.00 Lakhs
  • Criteria: Distinguished service of a high order in all fields of activities/disciplines, such as Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service, Trade and Industry etc.
  • First Recipients: 23 persons were awarded, notably, Homi J. Bhabha, Shati Swarup Bhatnagar, MS Subbulaxmi, Jamini Roy, Sukumar Sen, KS Thimayya and others.

Padma Shri

  • Monetary Grant: Rs. 2.00 Lakhs
  • Criteria: Distinguished service in all fields of activities/disciplines, such as Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service, Trade and Industry etc.



Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar

  • Introduced in: 2019
  • Monetary Grant: Rs. 51.00 Lac (Institution) and Rs. 5.00 lac (Individual)
  • Criteria: For excellence in areas of Disaster Management, like Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Rescue, Response, Relief, Rehabilitation, Research/ Innovations or Early Warning.
  • Number of awardees: Three
  • The award is announced every year on 23 January which is the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  • First Recipient: 8th Battalion, NDRF
